External Link Request[edit]

I would like to request permission to add an external link to the trivia site This Day Trivia.
This Day Trivia has been around in one form or another since 1989 (DOS program, BBS, web) and has an extensive trivia database organized by day of year. It is similar to the other external links and I believe would add value to this Wikipedia site.
Thanks in advance,
jeff denson editor of This Day Trivia — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thisdaytrivia (talkcontribs) 05:03, 2 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there Thisdaytrivia.  Not done: as you will notice, the external links currently in place link to sites which then link to separate articles - This day trivia only has a short summary of the event. By having a full article on an event, we can see whether the event is notable enough to go on the page. Also, the three external links are to reliable sources meaning they are trustworthy. This day trivia may not be a reliable source (they were all written by just one person) and, as said on the website, there are many, many sites just like this, so we cannot list them all. I can see your motive of wanting to put This day trivia as an external link, but here at Wikipedia, we don’t promote or advertise anything, which I beleive you are trying to do. Slightly unrelated, but your username violates our username policy as a promotional username. I am going to report you to the admins. Do not take this the wrong way - the block that may ensue can easily be avoided by simply changing your username after a request, just make sure to choose something not promotional or offensive. I hope that helps, if you have anymore questions, please reply to me at User talk:Willbb234 or go to the Teahouse. Thanks for your reply. ThisDayTrivia is not a commercial site in that there are no ads or revenue stream. I have been doing this site for 30 years because it's a passion. Not interested in the hassle of advertisers or tax records, etc.
The other linked sites are clearly commercial sites with ads.
I understand your concern about accuracy. ThisDayTrivia takes accuracy very seriously and I believe it to be one of the most accurate trivia sites out there. But you're right to be concerned, we all make mistakes. Check my Contributions page. I have reported/corrected many Wikipedia mistakes over the years. I fact check very vigorously. Besides, if in doubt about something's accuracy, everyone has Wikipedia and Google. This is far better than simply a link to your own article. And Sorry, I was unaware of the rule on usernames. Thanks for pointing that out. I have created a new user name that I hope meets Wikipedia standards. Again, thanks for responding and I appreciate your concerns. Pingin others for further opinions: @Toddst1:, @Deb:. Willbb234Talk (please {{ping}} me in replies) 09:20, 3 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It may well be a valuable site, but I do think a link to it would be out of step with our normal practice. I've often used the "Music and History" website as a reference for Year in Music articles, but I'm only able to do that because they supply a list of their sources. If ThisDayTrivia did the same, I'd be more than happy to include it.Deb (talk) 10:15, 3 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Deb. This is a website that you publishe yourself as an individual with out any evidence or reliable sources to back up what you publish. This is a classic WP:UGS - and excluded for all the right reasons. Toddst1 (talk) 16:47, 3 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
